Union University’s Student Government Association held the first senate of the fall semester on Wednesday, Sept. 1, in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel at which the association installed several new officers and tabled the first legislation of the semester.
Executive Vice President of SGA Savannah Garner already has plans for what she hopes senate will look like this year.
“I am excited for Senate this year. We have really changed it from past years by adding more themes and fun nights. I am also excited because we are finally changing and looking at the constitution which hasn’t been amended since 2001,” Garner said.
The night started with the appointment of several positions including senate chaplain and ambassador of arms.
Attorney General Ethan Voss then gave an overview of parliamentary procedure and what is to be expected of senators when addressing the floor. Voss also installed 12 class officers and one executive officer.
After the ambassador’s report by Steve Williams and finance report by Hattie Thomasson, the night moved into legislation. Senior Class President Bethany Wells and Senior Class Treasurer Maggie Bollinger presented the first senate resolution of the semester. They proposed that the Union University library relocate a printer to the second floor of The Logos.
After its presentation, senator Addison Coleman moved to table the resolution in favor of amending it for next senate to include moving a printer to the third floor of the Logos as well as the second. The majority of the senate approved this motion and the legislation was tabled.
Wells and Bollinger were open to the suggestion and plan to rewrite the legislation.
“I think it was a great suggestion to table the motion for now. It was a valuable thing to note. We are ready to rewrite the legislation and present it at the next senate,” Wells said.
The Student Government Association will hold the next senate meeting Sept. 15 at 9:30 p.m. in the chapel.
