The Union University men’s and women’s golf teams have overcome many obstacles leading up to their spring season. From taking COVID-19 tests to adjusting practice schedules due to inclement weather, the Bulldogs are anxious for it all to pay off with an opportunity to compete.
Ryan Chandler, head coach of both the men and women, has positive expectations for both teams.
“Both men’s and women’s teams had a solid fall. The women had a 2nd and 4th place finish and the men had a tournament win and a 2nd place finish,” said Chandler. “I expect both teams to build on that confidence they gained in the fall season.”
The teams are focusing on becoming stronger players both physically and mentally.
“We’ve been putting in time in the weight room and on the golf course to improve our physical golf game, but we’ve also spent time talking about what our mental game and what our mindset should be to help us push ahead of our competitors,” said Emma Korte, junior athletic training major.
Chandler is excited to see his returning seniors finish their college golf career on their own terms given that their senior season was taken away from them due to COVID-19.
Maison Felkins, senior communications studies major, is one of those returning seniors.
“We’ve really been focusing on believing in ourselves,” said Felkins. “We are a solid group of players, and our confidence has grown over the last year, but we’ve got a long way to go with that.”
Felkins is eager to travel and compete with the team.
“I love college golf,” said Felkins. “I’m going to miss it, and I’m not taking any of it for granted.”
To start off the spring season, the Union men’s and women’s golf teams will be competing at the Christian Brothers University Invitational March 8 through March 9 at Irene Golf Club in Memphis, Tenn.
