Organizational Highlight: Black Student Union

Recently Union University re-established the Black Student Union (BSU), founded with the intent of welcoming and bringing recognition to Black students at Union. The BSU has already hosted multiple events on campus.

The BSU was founded to serve four purposes as stated by their constitution:

  1. To promote culture and political awareness about the Black experience.
  2. To stand as a liaison between Black students and the University administration.
  3. To give a voice for the Black students and educate those around them.
  4. To take active measures towards fostering a welcoming environment for Black students attending a predominately white institution.

Veronica Perry, director of university printing/mailing services and faculty advisor, assisted in drafting the constitution.

“It has been a great honor and privilege to assist with establishing an organization that helps students of color strive for academic excellence while creating an avenue for self-expression and celebration of Black heritage and culture,” said Perry.

Perry believes the BSU plays an active role in maintaining, sustaining and bolstering student success on campus.

Jadelynne Green, senior social work major and president of the BSU, discussed long-term goals to continue the club and its mission.

“Our first goal is longevity. We want more Black students to stay here instead of transferring out because of a feeling of discomfort,” said Green. “Having this organization will not just help us but will help the school because we can keep more students, more specifically, students of color which will help everybody.”

Green went on to explain that they want to make sure Black students on campus have a voice. This would allow opportunities for students to be share their own personal experiences. This goal is encompassed in the organization’s motto: “Be inspired. Be represented. Be heard.”
