Around 60 students attended SGA Sophomore Council’s first ever Glow-in-the-Dark Easter Egg Hunt in the wooded area behind Union’s Penick Academic Complex at 9 p.m. last Tuesday night.
The hunt is an annual sophomore council tradition in recent years, but its “Glow-in-the-Dark” status was a new addition this year to make it stand out from the rest.
“Just making it different, making it new and something you didn’t do as a kid made it more of a novel idea,” said council member Nicholas Bitterling, sophomore biblical studies and political science double major.
The event included candies and treats, including glow-in-the-dark bracelets for participants to wear throughout the hunt and prizes ranging from mini candy bars to a $50 Visa gift card.
The hundreds of eggs scattered throughout the woods encouraged students to race and obtain as many eggs as possible. This left some participants nostalgic for the Easter egg hunts of their childhood.
“I really liked how there was all the hype right before the countdown, and we got to go [hunting],” said Naomi Mengel, a senior journalism major. “When I was younger, we would do Easter egg hunts at my grandparent’s house. Now that I’m older, I’m one of the people that hides the eggs, and so it was fun to get to just hunt for eggs with a bunch of other college students.”
“We all love being a kid sometimes,” said Bitterling. “It’s cool to do youthful, childish things sometimes with other people your age. You don’t take life too seriously; you can still enjoy yourself.”
Bitterling stressed the goal of SGA and this year’s Easter egg hunt was to promote community.
“Just being able to provide another event for people to actually get out and do stuff and see other people, meet people, it’s our way of trying to help people out,” said Bitterling.
