Student Activities Council To Host Backyard Bash

Next week from April 12 to April 17, the Student Activities Council (SAC) will be having Backyard Bash, which will feature a series of events across Union University’s campus throughout the week. Backyard Bash is a replacement for the organization’s annual Variety Show which was canceled due to COVID-19.

“My favorite part about SAC is seeing everyone’s creativity come together,” said Madison Grohler, SAC president. “I’m very excited for Backyard Bash because it showcases each one of our SAC members’ creative sides.”

Backyard Bash will kick off with its first event, Chalk It Up. It will take place at the sidewalk between the bell tower and the Grant Center on Monday, April 12. Students can come anytime between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and will have 50 minutes to draw a piece of chalk art. Their chalk pieces will be judged, and the winner will receive a $100 cash prize. The winners will be announced at 4 p.m. that afternoon.

Kite Fight is the second event for Backyard Bash. It will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 in the same location as Chalk It Up. At this event, students will decorate kites and fly them.

From 11 a.m to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, SAC will have the Kona Ice Truck in front of the Grant Center for students to enjoy shaved ice. The first 300 students will receive free snow cones.

Puppy Party is the fourth event for Backyard Bash. There will be puppies for students to play and spend time with. It will take place in the Grace Quad on Thursday, April 15 from 3:30 p.m to 5 p.m.

“I’m so excited for the puppy party on Thursday,” said Sam Glas, freshman creative writing major. “I’ve seriously been scheduling all my obligations around it. It’ll be such a nice break after a crazy week.”

Color Chaos is going to be at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 16 on the field by the chapel. For this event, students will throw chalk powder in the area. SAC will hand out white t-shirts for the first 150 students who attend, and they will also provide the chalk powder.

Backyard Bash’s last event will be Rock the Block on Saturday, April 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Great Lawn. This event will feature student bands who have signed up to compete for a $500 cash prize. Students who are not competing in the competition are welcome to attend.
