Think Pink Week: Zeta Tau Alpha Hosts Events To Support Breast Cancer Education And Awareness

On Oct. 4 and 6, Zeta Tau Alpha hosted the first two of several fundraising events during Think Pink Week and throughout October to support breast cancer education and awareness.

Zeta Tau Alpha served over a hundred ice cream cones at “Cones for a Cure,” which took place on Monday from 6-8 p.m. on the Bowld patio. “Percentage Night” took place on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Buff City Soap in Jackson, Tenn., where the sorority received 10% of each purchase for their philanthropy.

Alana Parkey, a senior biology major and president of Zeta Tau Alpha at Union, urges people to stay on the lookout for future events throughout October.

“October is breast cancer education and awareness month, so this year we’re doing more events throughout the month to keep the momentum going because it deserves more than just a week,” Parkey said. “As far as planning goes, there have been months of preparation, multiple meetings and some tears shed. A lot has gone into these, and we wanted to make sure that we were not only reaching the Union community, but also those outside of Union and just the Jackson community as well.”

On Friday, Oct. 8, Zeta Tau Alpha will pass out ribbons and take donations at the men and women’s soccer games. Saturday, Oct. 9, is their biggest event. They will host the “Knock Out Breast Cancer Kickboxing Marathon” from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Total Fitness Kickboxing in Jackson, Tenn. Though donations are suggested, it will be a free class with rotating instructors and open for anyone to participate.

Zeta Tau Alpha has set a goal to raise $3,000 throughout October, and at the time of publication, they have raised $2,652. Parkey hopes to exceed their goal. Each Zeta Tau Alpha member has an individual CrowdChange fundraiser link. Anyone can donate to their philanthropy at anytime here.

“I love being able to take part in Think Pink Week,” Alyssa Ward, a senior Spanish and English double major and Zeta member, said. “Using my time and energy to serve others, particularly breast cancer survivors, is humbling. Think Pink Week is important because we are able to provide such a large group of people many ways and opportunities to donate or get involved in a great cause.”
