Union University’s men’s soccer team won the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series Title last Saturday. This is the first conference title game appearance and victory for the program since joining the NCAA.
The game was held at the John Hunt Soccer Complex in Huntsville, Ala. last Saturday. The final score was 1-0, making this the third shutout of the season.
Forward Mats Fredrikson, a sophomore business management major, scored the one goal of the game. He said the biggest difference between this year and last year is the unity between teammates.
“The chemistry is better between the guys. I feel like we play better together,” Fredrikson said. “Last season, it felt like every game was fifty-fifty and that we could win or lose every game, but this year I had another feeling. I felt like when we came into a game, we had a chance to win every game.”
Goalkeeper Botond Nemeth, a freshman business major, said he didn’t know what to expect this season, but now he expects that the team can do this over and over again.
“It’s a big improvement in the last two years. We can only go up from here, and I think we can redo this every year from now on if we continue like this. We’ll only get better,” Nemeth said.
Moving forward, the hope is for more fans to be drawn to the games and for more talented prospects to be drawn to the program.
“The conference title is just the first step,” said forward Hunter Walker, a senior computer science major. “I believe Union’s new goal is a national tournament win.”
