Union Volleyball Opens Abbreviated Season With Three Wins

After a postponed fall season, Union’s volleyball team is back on the court and playing well in a short spring season.

The season kicked off Wednesday, March 3, in the Fred Delay Gymnasium against Christian Brothers University (CBU). The Lady Bulldogs beat the Buccaneers in three sets with a team hitting percentage of .443.

On March 6, the team travelled to Lee University to participate in two non-conference matches. The Lady Bulldogs played Lee and Shorter University, defeating both teams in three sets. Senior outside hitter, Meghan Delaney, was named one of GSC’s Top Offensive Players of the Week with 32 combined kills. Sophomore middle blocker, Emily Grace Calhoon, was named one of GSC’s Top Defensive Players of the Week with 15 blocks on the weekend.

This season the conference is broken into two groups, with five teams competing in Group A and six teams competing in Group B. The Lady Bulldogs have been prepping since the fall of 2020 for their four matches against the teams in Group A.

“We’ve put in a lot of time,” said Haley Ramsey, junior outside hitter and elementary education major. “Every day since we’ve been here we’ve been working.”

If the Lady Bulldogs win their side of conference play, they’ll have the opportunity to host the first two rounds of the GSC spring championship tournament on March 26 and 27. The semifinals and finals will take place at the Findley Center in Hoover, Ala. on March 31 and April 1. With the championship tournament only a few weeks away, the team is keeping their focus on the end goal: a championship title.

“Our goal is to go out there every single match and work hard,” said Emily Grace Calhoon, sophomore applied linguistics for pre-speech therapy major. “And to keep our eyes on the conference championship.”

The Lady Bulldogs next game will be against The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) on March 10 at 7 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
