At Midseason Point, Union’s Baseball Team Relies On One Another For Strength

The Union baseball team is at a difficult point in the 2021-2022 season. Going into last weekend’s series, Union had a record of 11-15, which fell to 11-18 after being swept by Delta State University.

With sights set on qualifying for the Gulf South Conference Tournament, the players are choosing to rely on one another and their team spirit.

“Even not speaking in terms of performance and just wins and losses, I think the biggest thing is that we create a kind of culture that us as players can lead and direct on our own,” Josh Bozoian, outfielder for the team and a graduate student studying executive leadership, said. “I think that’s the most important part about it. There’s a culture established within the players and kind of a big family that’s created.”

Bozoian is not alone in feeling that team spirit is key to finishing the baseball season strong.

“Perseverance has been our team thing, whether we say it or not,” Grayson Swanson, outfielder and junior business administration major, said. “Finishing this year, we’ve had to persevere through a lot of mental and physical adversity.”

Though the team is in a challenging spot in terms of current wins and losses, a spirit of optimism and a strong team bond prevail among the players.

“I feel that our chances are hindered. There is a sadness because we’ve worked so hard,” Sam Galbraith, pitcher and freshman athletic training major, said. “But I think what we’ve done the last couple weeks to build our bond has really grown us as a group. We all have each other’s backs, win or lose.”

Union swept Lane College in its doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. Next up for the Bulldogs is a conference series against Auburn University at Montgomery on April 9-10 in Montgomery, Ala.
