On Wednesday, April 6 in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel, the Student Government Association (SGA) senate met to pass three resolutions, one of which supported the creation of a job position as Union University mascot.
Senate considered three resolutions and one bill during the course of the meeting. Senate resolution 201-7 asked that Union University’s mascot, Buster, become a job position.
“I believe that making the Buster Mascot a full-time position is a natural evolution for Union as it continues to grow,” Grant Gammon, cosponsor of the resolution, said.
“I think that the mascot costume isn’t being used to its full potential,” senior class secretary Brianna Correia said. “There may be other organizations that would want Buster at an event that they’re hosting.”
After the resolution was presented, no debate occurred and resolution 201-7 was passed. The meeting continued to resolution 201-8 which would require all Union University professors to release grades for all assignments, quizzes and exams, on Canvas or another equivalent online program.
“I think it’s just overall more beneficial for the students at Union,” Correia said. “Being in the dark about where you stand in a class isn’t helpful, and I understand that professors get busy, but it would provide a lot of students with peace.”
This resolution was also passed without debate, unlike the third and final resolution which proved to be somewhat of a challenge.
Resolution 201-9 asked to add dry erase boards to the second-level study room in McAfee commons. After being presented, different questions arose, such as one by Grant Gammon who asked if the room was actually used for study or just for play. Senator David Alcazar argued that this never had to be a resolution at all, and that the resident director would already fix the issue. In the end, resolution 201-9 passed.
Senate also considered Bill 201-6, asking to allocate two hundred dollars to the Excel leadership program for an event Excel held in February titled “The Power of Gospel Music.”
Senate will reconvene for its next regular meeting on Wednesday, April 20 at 9:30 p.m.
