The Union University Mailing Services has changed the hours so they are open from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.
The goal of the change is to help accommodate the busy students residing at Union. Veronica Perry, the director of university printing and mailing services, spoke about the new hour change.
“What we run into, especially in the beginning of each semester, is that we have an overwhelming amount of packages,” Perry said, “but since we cannot designate the times packages arrive, students won’t get notified until 3 o’clock and 3:30 and the post office closes at 4 and so it was helpful for us to have two days a week where we can open later.”
Union recognized the issue provided for our busy students and provided a solution for our hard workers. Union wants to make things easier for the students here and will work out issues that occur.
“It is beneficial for students who student teach throughout the semester, nursing students, people who are on practicums or clinicals where they can still retrieve their packages after we close at 4 o’clock,” Perry said.
Perry addressed the university’s care and noted that the current changes started with package retrieval but might possibly shift to other services during those extended hours depending on what the students need. Perry also discussed how this was not only to help the students picking up packages but the students who worked as well.
“For our student workers, it gives them the opportunity to have more hours,” Perry said. “Instead of working off campus, you get to work on campus for longer hours, which is a big deal for our student workers who couldn’t fit in the number of hours they want during the day.”
Jeston Brawner, a senior psychology major and student worker at the post office, stated his opinion about the new time change.
“I thought it was very helpful,” Brawner said. “Many students can’t come in until later because of practicums and labs. We’ve had quite a bit of business with it picking up lately and a lot of students have said how helpful it’s been.”
The hour change has been a success according to Perry. She noted that the post office has seen an increase in attendance.
“We are here to serve the students,” Perry said. “Mailing services is part of the student life division and part of our model is that students are not an interruption to our thing; they are a part of it. This helps us to better help students.”
This change will not impact Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday hours.
