On Nov. 28 at 4:15 p.m., Sigma Tau Delta hosted its second annual “Fall Into Stories” event in the Writing Center.
The audience was offered homemade baked goods, hot drinks and background holiday music from a playlist on the projector while they listened to stories read in front of a projected fireplace. The event featured students from various majors reading their own creative writing, which included short stories, poetry collections and creative non-fiction pieces.
Senior English major and Sigma Tau Delta president Eunice Tan conceived “Fall Into Stories,” along with other class officers, as they sought to come up with an idea for a creative event that would bring the literary arts and Union’s community together.
“It unites likely and unlikely creative writers together in a safe space where all stories and voices are embraced,” Tan said. “It also brings in avid story readers who listen and get a moment of peace and joy away from school or work. It also has reached outside campus in the past — our first event was at Turntable Coffee where we reached many city listeners, something we hope to do again!”
Senior film studies major Emmeline Arehart was one among those who attended “Fall Into Stories” for the first time and the experience did not disappoint.
“There are a lot of talented writers on Union’s campus,” Arehart said, “but there often isn’t much opportunity for English majors, minors and other literary enthusiasts to showcase their work outside of the classroom. All of the writers were incredibly talented, and it was a joy to hear the work of so many gifted authors.”
Last year’s event featured four student readers and it has now grown in popularity with this year featuring ten students’ original works. Tan hopes that this special tradition will be continued.
“I will be graduating in May so the next ‘Fall Into Stories’ will be up to the next president, if they decide to continue the tradition. I hope they do! And I hope they will try to take it to the city-wide level like we did first year,” Tan said.
