On Feb. 9, Union’s Residence Life hosted Sit Down With Your Sister from 8-9:30 p.m. in the Bowld gym as a continuation of the fall event Stand Up For Your Sister.
The evening began with worship, and then Marisa Infield, the residence director for the Heritage Residence Complex, interviewed three women: Melissa Davignon, who lives on campus with her Union professor husband Phil and their four children; Courtney Searcy, who graduated from Union in 2014 and now works for Our Jackson Home as Editor-in-Chief and Emma Kate Hare, a 2022 Union graduate who works in the office of Student Leadership and Engagement. The event’s topic was life transitions.
While Stand Up For Your Sister focuses on the testimonies of the speakers and the struggles that women commonly have, Sit Down With Your Sister has a different goal.
“In the fall it’s very much like ‘you’re not alone in your issues. Stand up for each other,’ and this one is much more like having a conversation — talking about things that are applicable that aren’t as extreme,” Sarah Edgren, a junior psychology and family studies double major, said.
The panelists answered questions about how to discern God’s will in times of transition, what their relationships with the church looked like after graduating and how sharing their faith changed after leaving the “Union bubble.” They also took questions from the audience regarding romantic relationships and navigating friendships.
“I’m not called to what I thought I was,” Hare said when an attendee asked how she prepared to follow the Lord post-graduation. “I’m called to obedience.”
While the topics of Stand Up For Your Sister and Sit Down With Your Sister are different, their goals are still the same: to bring women together.
“I love seeing women just from all around campus,” Edgren said. “I feel like it’s really important to hear wisdom from older women who have been in this environment.”
