On Friday, April 21, Union University held its annual Awards Day Chapel in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel to recognize students, faculty and staff achievements made throughout the academic year.
“We do our work at Union for the glory of God, not for human awards and applause,” John Netland, provost, vice president for academic affairs and professor of English, said. “Nevertheless, it is fitting to honor those that have done well and who have exceeded expectations in their work.”
Many awards were given to seniors graduating in the coming two weeks for their academic achievements. Several awards were also given to individuals in adult studies for their achievements.
Scott Lancaster, Union’s multimedia producer for University Communications, was named the Gary L. Carter Staff Member of the Year for his service on and off campus, and Associate Professor of Communication Arts Ted Kluck was named the Carla D. Sanderson Faculty Member of the Year.
The faculty researcher of the year award was renamed The R. Keith Absher Award after Union’s former dean. Bryan Dawson, professor of mathematics, was awarded this honor due to his research and publishing of a calculus textbook.
Danielle Popson, a senior economics major, was among several students who won multiple awards, most often an academic achievement award as well as an award for research, innovation or overall excellence.
“Union’s administration are very encouraging and caring,” Micah McGee, a junior business administration major, said. “I appreciate the lengths they go to like this to support their students.”
McGee received a Student Research Excellence Award for his research on signaling theory (how people perceive authenticity) with a focus on social media.
Union University’s debate team was also recognized for its success in the 2022-2023 competition year.
