Union University’s Painter’s Guild held a 2D art sale on Friday Nov. 10 in the Student Union Building, which was lined with tables for art majors from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
They sold a diverse array of art such as paintings, stickers, bracelets and even Christmas ornaments.
Senior graphic design major Anna Meadows was selling posters and a children’s book she illustrated for children with disabilities.
“My mom is a special education teacher,” Meadow said, “and I thought it was very important for regular ed Pre-K kids to know more about kids with autism and so I created a book that introduced them in a very simple way.”
The 2D sale also provided for art majors to tell stories about things meaningful to them. Junior cell and molecular biology major Olivia Mueth spoke about what she enjoyed about the event.
“I like to see everyone’s creativity and get to share their abilities,” Mueth said, “because a lot of times it feels like the art majors are away in their cubbies and you sometimes get to see their art hung up in the hallways.”
The event also helps Union students recognize their fellow students on campus and build camaraderie through appreciation of each other’s talents.
“I think it kind of expands people’s horizons and helps them realize that there is more to Union than just backpacks and sports and leadership events,” Mueth said, “because there is a whole subculture of people who like art and make art and are really good at it.”
Meadows spoke on the purpose of the event.
“We do this every year for fun and 30% of the profits goes towards the Painter’s Guild,” Meadows said. “There is a lot of thought that goes into a lot of marketing and what people want and putting ourselves out there in the field where we sell our own artwork.”
Union art majors use this outlet to share their love of the medium with everyone while practicing fieldwork at the university. The 2D art sale bridges the divide and gives recognition to the talent that resides at Union.
