Vocatio Center Holds Annual Career Fair

The Union University Vocatio Center held its annual career fair on Feb. 28 and March 1 from 2-4 p.m. in the Carl Grant Center, bringing in businesses and organizations from the Jackson community, as well as from across the United States.

Students of all majors were welcome to meet with professionals and learn more about career opportunities. The first day was mainly for business, engineering, science and healthcare students. The second day was focused on social work and education.

“We used to have two career fairs at Union, one for the business department and one for the education department,” Stephanie Hawley director of the Vocatio Center for Life Calling and Career, said. “Now we have more opportunities for different majors during a two-day event.”

Union students with different interests or majors that did not fit the focus of the firms at the career fair were still encouraged to attend as there were various opportunities for many majors.

On the first day of the career fair, an engineering firm from Florida was recruiting students along with West Tennessee Healthcare and local banks and business firms. Former students who work at the firms, such as recent graduate Beau Houser, were at the event recruiting for FirstBank.

On the second day, school districts from around Tennessee as well as some charter and boarding schools filled the Grant center with job opportunities for education majors and social workers alike.

“I am curious about the different career opportunities in the area,” Lewis Talbot, a junior business major, said. “I really came for credit but learned a lot about different opportunities here in Jackson.”

The Vocatio center puts a lot of effort into this event each year to bring in groups to represent many majors. In previous years the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Customs and Border Patrol agency (CBP) have attended the event.

If students were unable to make it to the career fair, the Vocatio center is open for appointments to help students find careers, write resumes and general guidance for students on their future career paths.
