MOSAIC plans to host their fourth multicultural potluck this Friday, March 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Bowld Gym.
“MOSAIC is a group committed to community building and highlighting cultural awareness while focusing on ultimate unity with Christ,” Lydia McGinnis, senior intercultural studies major and executive council member of MOSAIC, said.
This event will be an opportunity to fellowship with one another and to try different foods from each other’s cultures. There is no admission fee for the event but it is encouraged that attendees bring a dish of their own to the potluck if they are able.
“You don’t have to bring a dish that is super elaborate,” Emma Arango, senior commercial music major and McGinnis’s fellow council member, said. “It can just be something you grew up eating.”
While MOSAIC’s primary goal for this potluck and previous ones has always been unity, this time around there is an additional desire that needs to be met so that unity can continue.
Considering that both McGinnis and Arango are seniors, there will soon be a need for new leadership in MOSAIC. With this event, they hope to find new people to pass the torch on to who are interested in the organization and its goal of fostering cultural unity on Union’s campus.
“We’re looking forward to finding new leaders to carry on MOSAIC into next semester and beyond and just really building a core community,” McGinnis said.
McGinnis and Arango have been involved in MOSAIC since their freshman year. With all the work and time they have invested in MOSAIC, they want to see it continue to flourish.
Frank Anderson, associate professor of ministry and missions and director for the Center for Racial Reconciliation, is the faculty sponsor and has witnessed and admired McGinnis and Arango’s hard work over the years. He wants to see the legacy they have built be carried on.
“It’s been tough sometimes but they have they have held it together,” Anderson said, “and this potluck may really bring some fruition to their efforts.”
Like previous potlucks, Anderson and other professors are expected to be in attendance at this event.
“Dr. Chance is bringing Texas caviar and Professor Gonzalez is bringing Mexican pastries,” McGinnis said.
Other dishes that can be expected at the potluck are ones prepared by Arango and McGinnis themselves. Arango plans to bring a Ugandian dish and McGinnis is planning on bringing a curry dish.
Anderson encouraged people to come to the event for three reasons.
“One, the food is going to be good. Two, the fellowship will be great. Three, I think it will look a lot like what Jesus wants us to be,” Anderson said.
For those interested in getting involved in MOSIAC, want to spend time celebrating unity in Christ or would just like a free meal, they can attend the potluck event this Friday.
