On Feb. 8 at 6:15 p.m., Union’s Student Activities Council hosted their annual bingo night in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel.
The chapel was filled with students playing to win the many prizes SAC offered. Each student received 12 bingo cards they could use toward whatever prize they wanted to win. The prizes included LEGO sets, a Nerf gun, gift cards, a movie night basket, a succulent subscription, AirPods and more.
Throughout the event, SAC distinguished the difference between bingo at Union and bingo at retirement homes. SAC team members even made a video in which they talked about the bingo night experience and how it was better than retirement home bingo. Jackson Glas, a sophomore digital media communication major, served as one of SAC’s three chairs for bingo.
“If you’ve never been to bingo, it’s not your grandma’s bingo. It is a show…You just have to see it to believe it,” Glas said. “Bingo is my favorite event because the production is at a 10. Everyone comes in, and we get to play loud music and do crazy lights and do fun videos…the ability to just do that for everyone is just an honor.”
Bingo night has also created amazing memories for students. Emily Gray, a junior graphic design major, has never missed bingo night.
“Last year I was putting all of my cards on one thing, and it was at the very end…so me and one of my friends went and got ice cream from the Lex and then we sat in the back and ate our ice cream while we waited,” Gray said, “and then we played and did not win, but it was still fun.”
One of the aspects of bingo night is the community that it fosters. Students from all around campus attend.
“There’s no better way to get people somewhere than free stuff…we lure them in that way, but really we want them to bring a group of friends and have a good time and have fun,” Glas said. “I feel like…even if they don’t win, they gather together and bond over losing, so either way they win in our hearts.”
