The Student Government Association hosted their semesterly “Dub” senate on March 27 at 9:30 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel where, after legislation was addressed, President Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver gave a speech and answered students’ questions.
Oliver opened his time with a speech. His speech stemmed from Burger King’s slogans “You rule” and “Have it your way.” When Oliver first put the image of the Burger King sign up on the screen, there was laughter but after he had delivered his message, the senate attendees were quiet and attentive.
“When I want to do things my way I miss out on God’s blessing,” Oliver said.
Oliver read a passage from Luke 5, encouraging obedience when we too are called to cast out our nets by the Lord, for despite our unfaithfulness in our rule, God’s rule brings blessings.
After his speech, Oliver opened the room to a general Q&A session.
As placards were raised in hopes of getting a chance to ask Oliver questions, Oliver recognized each individual and addressed them by name. Oliver also knew, off the top of his head, exactly how many days there were until graduation and encouraged seniors to finish strong.
During the Q&A, Oliver addressed a question on the progress of the new business building. Oliver shared photos and discussed the layout and functionality. Though the building is to be used primarily by business, engineering and computer science students, there will also be study spaces and an innovation hub that will open the building up to be utilized by all students.
“The idea is that those of you from whatever major who have an interest in creating things will be able to use this space as well,” Oliver said.
The building is projected to be finished by the end of January 2025 and move-in is projected to happen during spring break of 2025. According to Oliver, the building is currently on track to be completed by these projected dates.
Before the rules were suspended to allow Oliver as a guest speaker, senate occurred as normal.
