On Aug. 20, 2024, Union University dedicated its new Wellness Center, a facility over four times larger than its predecessor. The center offers group classes for everyone to enjoy and was designed with athletes, students and the community in mind.
The classes change weekly, and for the week of Sept. 22, offerings include weightlifting, cross training, yoga and spin. Yoga is the most-offered, with four sessions scheduled throughout the week, both mornings and afternoons.
Many members attending classes did not use the old Wellness Center, and those who did typically engaged in light training. After participating in a weightlifting class, the classes geared towards beginners and those wanting to learn proper techniques, rather than seasoned lifters. Even for those with prior lifting experience, it served as a helpful reminder to maintain proper form, and the supportive environment will make it feel like no one was working out alone. The weightlifting class includes exercises such as squats and bench presses.
On top of the all new offerings the wellness center has added a plethora of new machines. This includes 6 treadmills, equating to over 20 machines offered for cardio alone. For weightlifters, there are five power racks and five half-racks and a plate-loaded section. There is also a turf area that is excellent for machine-free exercise. For athletes, there is a Vertimax multi-faceted training system which is a fantastic option that you can use for working on sport specific motions and muscles.
Front desk staff noted that yoga and spin classes tend to attract both veterans and newcomers, creating an inclusive atmosphere that was slightly absent in the weightlifting class.
For those unable to attend group classes, the Wellness Center offers a three-week bodyweight exercise program on its website, requiring no extra equipment — just yourself and some water. After completing the first week of this program, you may find it an excellent way to strengthen your core and improve accountability, even if you can’t visit the Wellness Center daily.
“The Wellness Center does a fantastic job of making an environment that is welcoming and helpful to beginners just starting their workout journey!” Hannah Person, psychology major and employee of the wellness center said, “We have friendly front desk staff that can help with any questions you might have, and a plethora of helpful gym bros that are always willing to give tips and make a friend! If you’re into more individualized workouts or you need more specific guidance, we also employ a personal trainer that can help you out, and we offer yoga and spin classes that make working out super fun!”
The Wellness Center has a primary focus on allowing new members to learn the equipment through scannable QR codes, the group classes and their social media presence. These increased options that will give the students and community an enhanced experience compared to the previous Wellness Center.
The new facility has seen increased community attendance. Online, community members can purchase an individual one-year membership for $275, with alumni receiving a 25% discount. For occasional visitors, a day pass is available for $5.
Since opening, the Wellness Center has had a surge in content on its Instagram page, featuring regular posts about intramurals and weekly events, as well as the schedules for each weeks’ group class line-up.
For those interested in trying out classes, registration is available at the Wellness Center’s front desk. Classes are held Tuesday through Friday.
