Bulldog Baseball Slays Lane College Dragons in Triumphant Offensive Surge

On March 11, 2025, Union Baseball treated fans with a midweek clash against a local rival, the Lane College Dragons at 6p.m. on Union’s turf, Fesmire Field. With Union coming off their third straight weekend conference series loss, the slumping Bulldogs were eager to attack a struggling Lane College to get back on track before facing Trevecca Nazarene University this coming weekend.

“You know, I believe the vision as a whole is to see how we respond from a series loss,” Daniel Jones, Union’s assistant coach said. “I think it’s important to see how we respond as a family, as a team, as a unit; to see how see how great our team chemistry is, our camaraderie … and looking forward to building something moving into Trevecca.”

The foundation for building that momentum came at the hands of a lively display of Union’s offense, which forced a run-rule victory in seven innings by a score of 18-5, pushing the Bulldog’s record to (9-12). What seemed to be an early three-run strike from Lane in the first two innings was quickly parried by a Union offensive explosion, who scored runs in all seven innings. Junior business major and first baseman Grant Ross had a redemptive day at the plate with a trio of hits and RBI’s. Freshman catcher and business management major Caden Walker had himself a day with three hits just missing the cycle, only lacking a home run. Union took advantage of Lane’s lack of effective pitching often cashing in walks and HBP’s by a handful big hits.

Avoiding a couple bumps in the road, Bulldog pitching was competent, earning only five runs in the seven-inning game. Union starter and junior business major Eli Jackson went 1.2 innings of three run ball on account of a handful of walks before being relieved by freshman pitcher and exercise science major, Nathan Myers, who proved capable to command the zone for 3.1 innings, only earning two runs. Noah Toney and Brody Mann, both junior exercise science majors, each pitched an inning of scoreless baseball to wrap up an overwhelming Union University 18-5 victory.

Now Union has the stepping stone necessary to tackle their next conference series against Trevecca Nazarene University on Friday. The question is, how do the Bulldogs use the stepping stone to tackle the next conference series, an area which has been lack-luster of late? After Tuesdays’ victory, the answer may be simpler than they thought.

“You just gotta calm down and just have some fun,” academic senior exercise science major Joseph Hufstedler said, after showing a remarkable display of defense. “Go back to when you were a little kid.”

“Just play the game.”

Union faces Trevecca Nazarene University for the first of a three game series at Trevecca at 3 p.m. this Friday. The Bulldogs are (9-12) on the year, (3-8) in conference.
