Union University Athletics is preparing to host its second annual Day of Giving on April 10 — a 24-hour initiative meant to rally community support around student-athletes and elevate the future of the university’s athletics programs.
The campaign encourages alumni, student, family, faculty and community supporters to donate online through Union University Athletics websites and social media channels. All contributions go directly to support Union’s athletic teams with an emphasis on prevelant needs in the programs.
“This year’s annual Day of Giving is focused on two areas,” said Mark Campbell, head coach of the women’s basketball team and Union’s Athletic Director. “One is we desperately need a place in our outdoor athletic facilities — in softball and baseball and our two soccers — to be able to house the equipment that takes care of the field. And secondly, we need help in our general athletics fund to help our coaches with overages that they incur over the year.”
But the Day of Giving is not only about facilities and equipment — it’s about investing in the people behind the programs: the student-athletes who dedicate themselves to excellence in competition and academics and the faculty that lead programs with character and intentionality.
Cecily Berry, a senior majoring in business administration and a member of the Union golf team, emphasized all three areas that student-athletes are supported by the Day of Giving.
“Your generosity empowers us in faith, academics and competition,” Berry said.
Last year’s Day of Giving brought in generous support that funded new training gear, facility improvement and travel opportunities. This year, Union Athletics is hopeful to build on that momentum by reaching an even wider audience and increasing participation from the Bulldog community.
All donors can choose to give to a specific team or contribute to the general athletics fund, which helps meet unexpected costs and supports the development of the program long-term.
Union Athletics invites everyone to get involved, whether through financial contributions, sharing the campaign on social media or simply spreading the word. Every gift — big or small — helps provide necessary resources for the athletics teams.
“We’d ask that you join us, that you would pray for us, that you would share our needs and also give,” Campbell said.
